Movie Reviews and Previews Articles
SPOILERS AHEAD. MANY SPOILERS. Click here to revisit my Twilight review. For the Twi-Hard who will blindly love it, who will hear no word against it, who will hate the haters while overusing exclamation points, New Moon is for you. Full Story
Three Nine ladies were photographed at airports today after a few days of promotion in New York. Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard were at JFK, Kate Hudson was at LAX…presumably heading to LA for more press? Want to see Nine SO badly. As you know, all the ladies sing in the movie. Have you heard my Marion singing? Adorable. Full Story
I love football movies. Especially when they’re corny. But Laura laughed at me last week when I told her I wanted to see The Blind Side. You’re probably laughing at me for wanting to see The Blind Side. But Michael Oher’s story is irresistible. And while I can’t stand the Baltimore Ravens because I hate Ray Lewis, it’s nothing short of remarkable what Oher has accomplished. Full Story
Viggo Mortsensen was at the NY premiere of The Road last night. The Road was supposed to be an Oscar contender and still has an outside shot but since it’s been languishing on the shelf for a year, and with muted buzz going into the season, The Road and Viggo’s chances are now considerably more modest. Laura is prepping for the Nine junket. We’ve been watching footage all day. She’s sending Ben. Pout. Something we learned in research: Katie Holmes was rumoured to have auditioned for it and lost out to Penelope Cruz. Please. Like she could have held up against these ladies. Even Granny Freeze. Two ice queens share the screen, and one of them plays a woman turned man. Will anyone care? Will anyone see? You know I love my Gwyneth but she can’t sell a movie unless RDJ is in it. Nicole Kidman’s box office poison is equally lethal. Now the two of them are starring in an independent film called The Danish Girl. Full Story
Good on James Marsden. Finally. Because he’s almost always the other guy. Except with Katherine Heigl. He was the guy for her in 27 Dresses. Which is almost worse than being the other guy. In The Box however James is Cameron’s guy. It’s a thriller about a box and a million dollars and a button that kills someone… and what do you do? Trailer is below and the film opens on Friday. Full Story
At the premiere of Everybody’s Fine last night, Drew Barrymore stepped out in a Victoria Beckham and looked like a bridesmaid. Right? Hate that length. It cuts her off in the matron area. Everybody’s Fine stars Robert DeNiro has a father who crosses the country to be with his kids over the holidays because they’re too busy to come see him. Full Story
Isn’t this a moist Monday morning. First Brad, Becks in a bit, and this is Joseph Gordon-Levitt with his brother the other day throwing wish coins into a water fountain. It’s not relevant to the story, but I am not attracted to the brother. JGL on the other hand… So f-cking cute. Anyway, JGL has two releases coming up on the same day November 13th, neither look terribly promising. Full Story
Laura just sent me an email: Did you see the new Meg Ryan trailer? The one where she duct tapes her man to a toilet? Unfortunately you don’t really notice the plot because you’re too busy staring at her mangled face. So of course I had to look for it. And no, Laura wasn’t wrong. It’s the preview for Serious Moonlight. Full Story
For months I’ve been yapping about this girl – Anna Kendrick’s performance in Up In The Air is so impressive, she’s already being buzzed about as a possible Best Supporting Actress nominee, she’s been named one of the Top 25 to watch, and she’ll receive the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival in January. Full Story
It’s very, very, VERY early in the race so of course it could all change. But Colin Firth’s performance in A Single Man has already won him the Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival and the buzz continues to build through the first part of the season. Right now they’re saying he’s a lock on a nomination. Full Story
I know many of you are fans. So here’s Viggo Mortensen in Venice today at the film festival to promote The Road. The Road is also coming to TIFF. Yes…Viggo at TIFF. The Road was actually supposed to be released last year in time for award season. They said it wasn’t ready and pushed it back. Full Story
Am currently kissing Laura’s ass. Every day. Laura is running our TIFF programme. Which means she makes the call on who gets assigned for which interviews/carpets/screenings. Normally I try to stay off the junket board until I’m told. It can get tedious going from room to room asking the same questions, trying to make magic with only 3 – 5 minutes stuck in a small room opposite a surly actor. Full Story
Love Sandra Bullock so much. Did not love her last night in LA for the premiere of All About Steve. She looked much better while promoting The Proposal. Hate the dress – way too busy – and she seems to hate it too. When a woman doesn’t like her outfit, it shows. Strangely enough the way she appeared on the carpet appears to mirror the way she appears in the movies. Full Story
A rare Emily Blunt sighting at LAX yesterday – sexy and cute all at the same time. Am a big fan. Emily’s The Young Victoria which was released several months ago in the UK is finally opening in North America on November 13th. The Young Victoria will also close the Toronto International Film Festival with both Emily and co-star Rupert Friend confirmed to attend. Full Story
The TIFF guest list was released this morning. Stacked with celebrities. None more powerful of course than the Mighty Herself, Oprah Winfrey. Looks like Precious is making an Oscar push. And as we all know, Oscar campaigns begin in Toronto. Which is why the Opes, being a producer, along with Tyler Perry, is throwing Her influence around where it’s needed to see this through. I read the last quarter of The Lovely Bones at work in 2002. I had bought the book the previous evening, didn’t sleep, read through the night, and could not even open my email until I finished. Back then I shared an office with Erin, a wonderful friend, and she walked in and found me hunched over my desk, obsessively devouring every word, and sobbing. Full Story
No secret, Judd Apatow is hot. Everyone wants to work with him after a hot streak of success at the box office over the last 3 years. His latest release Funny People features an all-star cast led by Adam Sandler who is said to deliver his most affecting performance since Punch Drunk Love. Yeah, so, um, Eminem makes a cameo in the movie. Full Story
Jonathan Rhys Meyers celebrated his 32nd birthday yesterday at the U2 show in Dublin almost a month after he was arrested in Paris for pulling a Kiefer Sutherland style drunken rage on a waiter in an airport bar. He’ll appear in court in September. JRM has been f-cked up now for over 2 years but is said to be working hard at sobriety and indeed, he does look much healthier here, with a little extra weight, and a lot less crazy in the eyes.
